Our Club, Our Players, Our Program: Vuate Karawalevu’s Journey

The Kaiviti Silktails Rugby League Club has always prided itself on being more than just a team. It’s a community, a family, and most importantly, a launchpad for talented players to fulfill their potential and chase bigger dreams. Through our new initiative, Our Club, Our Players, Our Program, we celebrate the incredible journeys of players who have come through our ranks and achieved greatness.

This week, we shine the spotlight on Vuate Karawalevu, whose story is a testament to resilience, dedication, and the power of strong support systems.

From Marist Brothers to the World Stage

Vuate Karawalevu’s journey began as a standout student at Marist Brothers High School, where he demonstrated early promise in rugby league. His potential didn’t go unnoticed, and upon finishing high school, he joined the Kaiviti Silktails. It was here that his transformation began—not just as a player but as a person.

Vuate quickly adapted to the physical and mental demands of professional rugby league. Under the guidance of the Silktails’ dedicated support staff, including former head coach Wes Naiqama, Chairman Petero Civoniceva, and club’s Executive Director Stephen Driscoll, he honed his skills and embraced the discipline required to succeed at the highest level.

“The Silktails was the biggest blessing in disguise,” Vuate reflects. “At a young age, being tested in a physical sport like rugby league and having the best support staff working hard behind the scenes showed how much they wanted the best for us, not just on the field but off it as well.”

Reaching Greater Heights

Vuate’s dedication paid off as he transitioned to play for the North Sydney Bears, and later, became part of the Sydney Roosters system in the NRL. His impressive performances earned him a spot in the Fiji Bati squad, where he made his debut during the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. Representing his country on the world stage was a dream come true, and he credits the Kaiviti Silktails program for laying the foundation of his success.

But Vuate’s journey didn’t stop there. This year, he showcased his versatility by crossing codes, playing for the NSW Waratahs in the Super Rugby Pacific competition. His remarkable talent and adaptability caught the attention of the Fijian Drua, with whom he has signed for the upcoming season. Most recently, Vuate achieved yet another milestone by making his debut for the Flying Fijians, fulfilling a lifelong ambition to represent his nation in rugby union.

Lessons from the Silktails

Reflecting on his time with the Silktails, Vuate shared a valuable lesson:

Only the players that want it the most will succeed.

The early mornings, grueling gym sessions, strict adherence to diets, and listening to coaches are all part of the discipline instilled by the Silktails. For Vuate, these habits became the cornerstone of his journey to success.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if the Kaiviti Silktails didn’t see the potential in me that would take me to greater heights and help me achieve bigger dreams,” he says.

A Program That Builds Champions

Vuate’s story is one of many that underline the importance of the Kaiviti Silktails program in shaping Fijian rugby league players. Through initiatives like Our Club, Our Players, Our Program, we aim to give these players the recognition they deserve while highlighting the impact of our club in their development.

For the Silktails, it’s not just about creating great players—it’s about creating great individuals. Vuate Karawalevu is a shining example of what can be achieved with hard work, guidance, and the unwavering belief in one’s potential.

As Vuate continues to make waves in both rugby league and rugby union, his journey inspires the next generation of Silktails to dream big and work even harder. His story proves that the Silktails are not just a team but a beacon of opportunity for young Fijian talent.

The Legacy Continues

Vuate Karawalevu’s achievements are a proud reflection of what the Kaiviti Silktails stand for. As we celebrate his story, we also look forward to nurturing the next generation of Fijian stars, who will undoubtedly carry forward the Silktails legacy.
